Kerala backwaters tourism offers a unique and enchanting experience in the southwestern Indian state of Kerala. The backwaters are an extensive network of interconnected rivers, lakes, and canals that meander through lush green landscapes, quaint villages, and serene paddy fields. This network spans over 900 kilometers, making it one of the most extensive and picturesque backwater systems in the world.
Geography and Scenery: The backwaters are primarily located along the Malabar Coast of Kerala and encompass several key regions like Alleppey (Alappuzha), Kumarakom, Kollam, and Kochi. The landscape is characterized by palm-fringed shores, dense coconut groves, and vibrant greenery. One of the main attractions of Kerala backwaters is the traditional houseboats known as "kettuvallams." These houseboats are crafted from natural materials like bamboo, coir, and wood.

Excellent place for a one day hideout....natures beauty at its best...I loved the place...
Such a lovely place to go to spent beautiful evenings. It's simply magical when when the sun's light reflects when it's about to set! Local people will take you for a ride through the river in small boats, you just have to pay them if they ask you to. There's a toddy shop and the food there is really spicy and tasty 😋
This is a beautiful place to view sunset. It is world popular for sunsets. Take a vanchi from the kadavu and view the sunset from the middle of the lake. Even walk through the island is also really nice. The boat ride may cost is max 500 (bargain).
A calm and quiet place..It is a small island share you could visit one of the best Sunset ever in Kerala.. To be at Kakkathuruth for Sunset is considered as one the best destination in the world by National Geographic's Travel Magazine. Just go there z enjoy the village walk , canoe ride and the sunset.
A good place to relax. One hour can be spend walking through the greenery of island, seeing small boats, small houses under the virge of sinking. Good to spend during event and see the sunset.
One of the best blackwater to visit. Loved the toddy there for sure go stuff for food hunters. You can explore the isolated island beauty.
The feature article in Deccan chronicle about National Geographic Channel mentioning a small island kinda place as the best place in the world to be at 6p.m if one happens to travel around the world in 24 hours took me here, along with my family. And the sunset is really a refreshing experience as always. But apart from this there is nothing much to make this a must go place. The hospitality of the people is very lovely. They treated us with so much care having come to see their small island. For people who want to follow their heart on an exploration spree, this twilight is a different choice.
Visit Kakkathuruthu village and Kaithapuzha Lake and must say that it is such a blissful location and absolutely serene. Visit the beautiful islands and watch the village life. Had loads of fun with activities like fishing, kayaking, pedal boating and shikara boating for hours in Kaithapuzha Lake which is surrounded by palm fringe , coconut trees and greenery all around. The place is like a small piece of heaven on earth. Winded up the noon Lunch with some spicy crab dishes, fish fry and prawns roast in a lake side food court and the food is just awesome and sumptuous. Entire evening spent on the pristine backwater and cruising with Tea and Banana fritters. Watch the beautiful sunset during boat ride.
A wonderful place with its own lush green surrounding , surrounded by full water. To reach the place we have to take a small boat to the island and guess what rest is all magical.
Such a beautiful island tucked away in the south of India. We were fortunate to stay at Kayal Island Retreat to enjoy the island. The ride along the waters are mesmerizing. Walking through the island you see how much soul it has. Loved to meet the locally people. Would definitely recommend a visit!
Great place to spent your time.. If you like walking then its a must visit. People are so humble and nice
A quite and beautiful place. Best time to visit would be early morning or during evening.
If you go a little inland fromEramallur in Ernakulam Arur, you can reach Kakkathurut. It's a small placethat used to have a lot of foreignersand so on but lately there aren't manypeople. If you arrive in theevening, if you talk to the locals, you can take a nice stroll along thebackwaters.
A beautiful small island with loving people😍 Perfect spot for peaceful sunsets🔥
A small and scenic island. * You should take small boats to reach there. * Friendly peoples and family there. All most near to 90 families in the island. They were so friendly with us, gave us food. * Small shops there. The shop is near to the boat jetty. Evening tea and snacks are good. * The place is beautiful for us, but when asking them they will say that it's really difficult to live there. ( If emergency happen they should take the boat to get to the town, and also drinking water problem).
A calm place to relieve oneself from the busy life of the city.... with some kayaking activity in the backwater to watching the sunset from a boat stationed at the middle of the great lake, and a stumpous meal adds merry to a calm weekend day..
A beautiful island surrounded by water on all four sides. Tourists mostly come here to see the sunset. If you pay ten rupees, you can reach the island by boat from the shore.
It is an awesome spot for nature lovers and environmentalists... The forest cover is so inspiring and the cool breeze stabilizers the atmosphere even in the extreme weather conditions.. The native folks are innocent and makes it a peaceful place for living...
Its a calm, quiet and beautiful place. If you are a nature lover then you will surely like this. And if are willing to walk around this Island, there are more beautiful sceneries. The most highlighting thing in this Island is the boat rinding around the lake and the sunset view. If you are a nature lover or a photographer then you must visit this place. Make sure you are visiting this place in a sunny day, because rain can ruin your entire trip in this Island.
An Awesome place for peace, Sight seeing Canoe ⛵ Boat service is the good option for all peoples with less cost, who want to visit good calm places. Good experience in Canoe Boat, NAT GEO's world's good wonderful place to see the Sunset ⛅, one particular view point is there to visit the Sunset, but it's not suitable when rainy season, most of the places where get mud (puddles) because of rain, and one awesome house model is there that is made by full of clay(some people's of that place told that the model was made for some project purpose), it looks too good. Fishing 🎏 was going there, morning fresh toddy is available there with good side dishes were available in kakkathuruthu Toddy shop. For one day visit that's an awesome place.
